Perched on a cliff overlooking a meander in the Lot river, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is one of the most popular Most Beautiful Villages in France and was elected favourite village of the French in 2012.

What to see and do in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie?

1. A preserved historical heritage

  • The medieval village Stroll through the narrow streets lined with 13th- to 15th-century houses with wooden and stone facades, mullioned windows and shop arches.
  • The village has 13 historic monuments, including the fortified church and the remains of the castle belonging to the Lords of Lapopie.
  • Le Rocher de la Popie Climb up to this belvedere for a breathtaking view of the Lot valley and the brown-tiled roofs of the village.
  • The museums Don't miss the International Centre for Surrealism and International Citizenship to the Georges Henri Rignault Arts Centre and the André Breton House (the surrealist writer lived there), as well as the international artist residency at the Pierre Daura House, dedicated to the Catalan artist.

2. Activities and walks

  • Cruises on the Lot The Gabarre: Take a trip in a gabarre (traditional boat) or canoe at the foot of the village, along the famous towpath. A fun and instructive experience, especially with the «Pirate» cruise for children.
  • Hiking The GR 651 links the village to the towpath from Ganil to Bouziès, It offers a variety of landscapes between the causses and the valley. It takes 1 to 1? hours to walk from the Lot to the heart of the village.
  • Arts and crafts Saint-Cirq-Lapopie: Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is a hotbed of creativity. Galleries, artists' studios and local craft shops liven up the narrow streets. The village has inspired such greats as André Breton, Henri Martin and Pierre Daura.
  • Events : In summer, don't miss the Heritage Days (special «Saint-Cirq Lapopie and the artists» tours), the fireworks of 14 July, which illuminates the cliffs, or the Frida Festival open-air cinema.

History: A journey through time

Founded in the 13th century, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie was a strategic location for four seigneuries of Quercy Gourdon, Cardaillac, Castelnau and Lapopie. The village, once fortified, has retained its medieval charm intact.

In the 20th century, it attracted artists and writers, seduced by its timeless atmosphere. André Breton wrote : «I stopped wanting to be somewhere else».».

Practical information for tourists

Access and parking

  • By car Six pay car parks (April to mid-November) surround the village. The P5 Bancourel car park offers the best views. Allow 15-20 minutes to walk up from the lower car parks. Car park P4 Village is the closest and requires the least amount of walking.
  • By public transport Bus liO from Cahors (line 878, or 889 for the lower part of the village) or Figeac (889)
  • By bike or on foot The towpath provides a picturesque route from Bouziès.

Accommodation and catering

  • Stay in one of the rooms at the Maison du Barry in Cabrerets, Just 12 minutes away by car (free parking in the village square or private car park).
  • Eat at La Roue restaurant in Cabrerets before or after your trip, or in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie itself at one of the many fine restaurants in the village, including Le Cantou with its superb little terrace, or Le Gourmet Quercynois. Be sure to book in advance during the season!

Visiting tips

  • Ideal duration 1/2 day express passage, 1 day with a heritage visit, or 2 days with the surrounding area (including the Pech Merle prehistoric cave, not to be missed).
  • Comfortable shoes The streets are cobbled and steep. If you find it difficult to walk, don't go too far down into the village - it's hard to get back up!
  • Animals Dogs are allowed on a lead. Do not leave them in your vehicle.
